Hello there, how are you getting on?
Wow, you are looking STUNNING this afternoon! Are you trying something new with your hair? It’s really working for you, really accentuating your cheek bones x
To begin this weeks newsletter I would just like to say a H U G E, ginormous, monstrous thank you to everyone who took the time to read and/or subscribe to the newsletter last week and who sent me a little text, email or WhatsApp! I’m feeling very blessed to have all of you special humans in my life and your kind words have made me feel like one of those pink mini marshmallows on the inside. Thank you, thank you, thank you xxx
(Also I don’t know if it’s to compensate for my waning grasp on the English language or my lacking ability to articulate myself but it is taking all of my willpower not to add a “:)” to the end of each sentence. I don’t know if this is because I am feeling the opposite to :) but want to make you feel :) or because I get bored of full stops and capital letters very quickly. Stay tuned to see if I cave :) Dang it!)
Before I launch straight in, I just wanted to do a little bit of housekeeping and let you know that I’m not entirely sure what format these Newsletters will take. I do think that for the coming weeks I’m going to try and write a longer form Newsletter bi-monthly and then a taster Newsletter in the weeks between. Today you will be receiving one of these tasty little taster Newsies (apologies for this change of term if I wrote Newsletter one more time I may have had to slam my laptop down on my own fingers) that will give you a little update on my life and five things that I have consumed and enjoyed that week. This could range from a brand of tinned fish I ate on a dry cracker to a nice bike I saw on a walk or a podcast that made me laugh until I cried (in either a good or bad way).
So with all of that taken care of let’s get this Saucy Little Sunday Newsletter underway!
Tony Cantwell’s Hit Show
Tony Cantwell truly is the man, the myth, the legend! I’m late to the party on this recommendation because unfortunately I am one of those people that when everyone is obsessed with someone or something I just don’t want to engage with it. I know that’s very Tumblr 2013 of me but there was a point in college when every single person quoted The “Meanwhile at Clongowes... (Soft Drink?)” Video and to be perfectly honest, I didn’t really understand the hype.
Yes, I’ve said it and I’m ready to be socially excommunicated because of it.
Since 2017, however, I have discarded the shackles of Hipsterdom and had watched some of his sketches and found them funny. It wasn’t until I saw him live in Vicar’s Street with Bronagh, that I truly understood his power as a comedian and entertainer. He was bloody brilliant and my face was having spasms afterwards because I smiled so much.
Even though I had such a great experience at his show I was still reluctant to listen to his podcast (the Hipster inside you never dies). Bronagh sent me an episode last week, however, and once I listened to one I knew I had to listen to them all. Last Sunday when Johnny and I were feeling very hungover and sorry for ourselves we listened to THIS episode and laughed so much we cried.
Tony Cantwell is a comedic genius and I will not let anyone or the Hipster inside my head tell me any different!
Paris, Texas
Paris, Texas is a 1984 road movie directed by Wim Wenders and starring Harry Dean Stanton, Dean Stockwell, Nastassja Kinski, Aurore Clément and Hunter Carson. The plot focuses on a vagabond named Travis who, after mysteriously wandering out of the desert in a dissociative fugue reconnects with his son and embarks on a voyage through the American Southwest to track down Travis' long-missing wife.
I saw this yesterday in the IFI, but it has just been digitised and rereleased so I’m sure it’s in a cinema near you too - wherever you may be. Honestly, this wouldn’t be the way I usually spend my Saturday afternoons but I’m trying to watch more films and this is one I’d always heard about but never seen. Also since working in film and TV (can I say that idk???) I have come to realise the power of watching a film on the big screen. I don’t say that to sound condescending because I still always watch things on my phone but for films especially I think it’s nice to see them in the way they were intended to be seen and heard.
Paris, Texas is possibly the most beautiful films I have ever seen. The breath taking mise en scene and cinematography depicts a world of paradox, a world of both natural beauty and contemporary urbanity which I found to be a stunning parallel to the plot of the film which speaks about the greyness of life, love and relationships in the most eloquent way. If you are thinking about heading to the cinema in the coming days I would definitely recommend catching this stellar flick x
Also, I must pay homage to my favourite character in the whole film: the iconic pink fluffy jumper. Honestly, the stage presence this item of clothing has is truly sensational (as is the actor who wears it).
I’m trying to watch more films so follow me on LetterBoxd if you would like x
Uno Mas
Catherine Cleary from The Irish Times in 2018 said the following about Uno Mas "We knew it would be great. The thrill is that it’s perfect." I may also be late to the party on this recommendation but gosh darnit it was delish, also I’m obsessed with how extra Miss Cleary is like ugh “the thrill” what a gas woman!
I’ve wanted to go to Uno Mas for a HOT minute. I actually think it was one of the first restaurants I ever heard about in Dublin because when I was in first year a friend’s friend got a job there and it was considered the height of sophistication that my friend got to bring a date there and get a free starter. Like all he did on this date was get a free starter and leave. How gas! I’ve been walking up and down George’s Street a lot recently and every time I pass it I always think “I really need to go” and on Friday night Johnny and I finally did it.
After we finished our dessert (pictured below) I announced that the meal was “Yum a Dum Dum” which when Johnny heard me say this informed me that I shouldn’t become a food reviewer. To be honest though, I disagree I think the “Yum A Dum Dum” rating could catch on just like the Michelian Star! Watch out foodies, I’m coming for your gig.
Overall, the food was delicious. The Show Stoppers for us were a rice dish that we had to start, the halibut we had for mains and a deluxe flan for dessert. As well as the food being scrumdidiliumptious (yes, I did have to add this to my thesaurus) the drinks were wonderful too. All in all, a wonderful eve.
I just wished someone looked at me in the same way Johnny looked at this flan
Getting Film Developed
I have an Olympus point and shoot camera that I don’t use enough and even when I use it I always seem to forget to get my film developed. So in May I dropped a roll into the one and only John Gunn and completely forgot about it until I found the docket when tidying my room.
What I love about taking film photos and having the memory of a goldfish is that I always forget what the pictures may be. I was over the moon when I saw that this roll captured my family’s trip to Italy, Johnny’s Birthday Party, a BNO with Orla and Claire and everything and anything in between.
I’m not opposed to taking pictures on my phone camera but I probably should be because I’m a bit crap at it. They never really seem to capture the people I love or what I’m doing in the way I want them too. What I love about taking film pictures is that they seem to capture an essence of my friends, the twinkle in my parents eye or an odd little corner of the world in a way I can never seem to do on my phone. What can I say, the Hipster in me never truly dies x
Please see below for assorted pics that were developed this weekend.
Hot Girls - Charli XCX
One of life’s simple pleasures is watching Movie Trailers and recently I stumbled upon A24’s second trailer for Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. What can I say, came for the Pete Davidson, stayed for the tunes.
The film itself looks way too scary for little old me but the track over the trailer was nothing short of a bop and I was like “… Charli, dat u girl?” but didn’t recognise the song. Turns out it’s a new bop that she has just released. All I can say is that it is nothing short of an anthem for a bombshell Summer. As the Summer is winding down, I am hoping this will be my hot girl Summer anthem throughout the winter because I will most definitely need it once the Seasonal Sadness hits lol!
It’s also way more fun than the music I have been listening to pretty much all Summer that you can find on this playlist ;’( if you are interested in being a Mourning Person like me :)
Queens, I gotta bop and use the rest of my Sunday afternoon to drink tea and there are rumblings of a Roast Chicken Dinner in the Collins Household this eve so I need to investigate further.
If you got this far, smash that subscribe button and by smash that subscribe button I mean thank you so so much for reading.
Also, as a few people have subscribed who are not my closest family and friends which is incredibly nice and sweet and I am shocked by. I have decided to create a Buy Me a Coffee Account which means that even though this is a free newsletter I can get paid in Cappuccinos or Cortados or Grande Maxi Vanilla Whipped Frappe’s directly to my bank account if you like my little newsletters and so wish to buy me a coffee.
Please don’t feel any pressure to pay though, I love you and writing endlessly regardless!!
